Spray Business Consultancy & On-Site Staff Training
Good orders should produce good work and a worthwhile margin. When a spraying operation is held back by rework, slow production or inconsistent staff routines, Spray Masters can work inside the business to help put it right.
Practical support from Ashley Wright: more than 20 years in specialist coatings, with Spray Masters training more than 800 people since 2017.
Find what is holding the operation back
Look at the whole process, from the first job instruction to the finished work
A finish can look good while the job loses money. The cause may sit in preparation, repeat visits, material use, drying capacity, staff handovers or the way work was priced. An operational review connects those decisions.
Repeated coating defects
Review substrates, preparation, compatibility, contamination and application routines. Investigate why work needs correcting and agree practical corrective actions.
Inconsistent staff methods
Identify the skills and instructions each operator needs. Agree a consistent method for preparation, setup, application, inspection and handover.
Production bottlenecks
Follow the work through preparation, spraying, drying and inspection. Find where jobs queue, handling increases or the booth waits for the next stage.
Material and labour costs
Understand how time, mixing, changes of colour and rework affect the cost of delivering each order. Put useful figures alongside the job.
Quotes with weak margins
Review labour, materials, access, preparation risk and the promised scope. Help the business price the job it will actually have to deliver.
Difficult live projects
Discuss technical guidance or assistance at your working site. The location, coating system, access and exact support required are agreed before mobilisation.
Train the team doing the work
On-site spray training built around your staff, equipment and jobs
Training is most useful when staff can relate it to the surfaces, products and equipment they use each day. We can assess the team’s current approach, demonstrate agreed methods and help operators practise them in the working environment.
The scope can cover preparation, masking, coating selection, equipment setup, application control, defect recognition and inspection. Product choices and working controls need to suit the manufacturer’s technical and safety information and your actual operation.
For team leaders, the focus extends to clear job instructions, staff responsibilities, practical checklists and quality-control points. That gives the team a standard it can follow when the trainer has left.
Workshop training at our Derby spray training centre can also be included where a focused practical programme is the better starting point.
From diagnosis to practical changes
Agree the problems, the priorities and the work needed
Discuss the operation
Understand your workload, staff, recurring problems and commercial objectives. Agree the scope and suitability of a visit or programme.
Review real work
Observe the agreed jobs and processes. Assess preparation, application, handovers, production flow and the information the team works from.
Put improvements into practice
Agree priorities, retrain staff where needed and help introduce clearer methods, checklists and inspection points.
Review progress
Compare the agreed measures and discuss further support. Follow-up mentoring and site assistance can be included in the proposal.
Production improvement you can assess
Measure the change against the operation you actually run
Agree a starting point before changing the process. Useful measures are straightforward enough for the team to record and specific enough to show where time and money are going.
| Measure | What to track | What it helps reveal |
|---|---|---|
| Rework | Jobs or components needing a repeat preparation or coating stage | Recurring defects and weak control points |
| Labour time | Time used at each agreed stage | Extra handling, waiting and jobs priced too lightly |
| Material use | Coating use and avoidable waste by job or batch | Where mixing, setup and rework add cost |
| Production flow | Work completed, work waiting and handover dates | Bottlenecks and unreliable sequencing |
| Job margin | Agreed price against the cost of delivering the scope | Whether the work supports the business commercially |
Measures and targets are agreed around your products, equipment, team and workload. Any improvement figures should come from the work measured.
Technical skill and commercial direction
Spray business mentoring beyond the workshop
Operational support can sit alongside mentoring on service mix, quoting, customer communication, lead handling and the way the business presents its expertise.
For established firms, that can mean reviewing which jobs fit the operation, how enquiries are qualified and how preparation risk is explained before a price is accepted. For new operators, the starting point may be equipment, suppliers, a clear offer and a workable launch plan.
Spray Masters also offers a twelve-month business mentoring programme, with website support and commercial development alongside technical guidance. Choose the scope around the help your business needs.

Experience from coating work, product testing and failure investigation
Ashley has more than 20 years of specialist-coatings experience, including domestic refinishing, nationwide commercial projects, product testing and development in the UK and Italy, and expert reporting on poor application and coating failures.
Spray Masters has delivered training since 2017 to more than 800 people, with students from the UK, Europe and Canada. The team continues to carry out real coating work from its Derby base.
That experience informs how we assess a problem: the substrate, coating system, staff understanding, working environment and commercial decisions all need to fit together.

Company support can include an operational review, practical staff training, production improvement and business mentoring. A workshop course is one option within the wider support available.
