Places to Visit in Derbyshire

Here is a list of Our top 5 places

In at number one

Dovedale

For a great walk with the family it has to be “Dovedale” You must know the stepping stones! if you don’t then your missing out. Dovedale is a renowned beauty spot, although it is actually around 2-3 miles long! The River Dove flows through Milldale, Wolscote Dale and Beresford Dale.

Parking is easy with many car park areas available with overflow car parks also at the ready. We wouldn’t advise walking up any of the big hills in the rain! You may end up face planting the floor.

At Number two

Carsington Water

Carsington Water is a reservoir operated by Severn Trent Water located between Wirksworth and Kniveton in Derbyshire, England. The reservoir takes water from the River Derwent at Ambergate during winter months, pumping up to the reservoir by 10.5-kilometre long tunnels and aqueduct.

They have water sport options, an onsite restaurant with takeout & sit down options. The main park area features two children’s parks one for the toddler age range and then one for the older kids & even some “Adults” like to have a go.

Many visitors simply use Carsington as a meet up place for a BBQ & pick nick zone with family & friends

In at number Three

Black Rock

BlackRock – The Black Rocks is a small outcrop of natural gritstone, between Cromford and Wirksworth in the Derbyshire Peak District, England. Parking is available for a small fee. Some choice not to use the car park and opt for the side of the road before the entrance.

Just be careful if you venture up the main big “Rock” don’t go near the edge as the drops one that you won’t come back from “safety first”. We also don’t recommend the big hill route on wet days, the gravel path can sometimes move underneath your feet, causing tumbles.

Great for picnics as there are lots of seating areas & also a café.

In at number four in our Places to visit in Derbyshire is….

Matlock Bath

Matlock Bath – The Seaside Town without the sea! Everyone should go to Matlock bath it’s a great trip out with the family that won’t cost the earth. You have lots of choice for food with various chip shops & pubs that serve all kinds of food. You have an Indian restaurant which is also top notch.

You also have the heights of Abraham & Gulliver’s kingdom at your finger tips in Matlock bath, both great for the kiddies.

History of Matlock Bath Illuminations

The Matlock Bath Illuminations have a long established history dating back to 1897 – first held to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. It was the recollections of an earlier visit to Matlock Bath, by the then Princess Victoria that inspired the Illuminations. She recalled how, when staying in Matlock Bath, she looked out of her hotel window and saw the candle lights were reflected in the River Derwent that flows through the centre of the village. The twinkling lights made a lasting impression on the young Princess.

Last but not least

Allestree Park.

Allestree Park is heavily wooded and contains veteran trees, large areas of grassland, open water, marshland and hedgerows
