Internal doors—not external door marketing

Oak doors do not become worthless because the room has changed.

A houseful of sound internal doors can represent a serious investment. If the oak, stained timber or existing colour no longer suits the interior, professional spray finishing can change the scheme without replacing every door, hinge and latch.

This service is specifically for interior doors and removable joinery. External composite and uPVC doors require different preparation and coating systems; they are assessed under SprayMasters’ separate exterior door services.

Why door spraying fails

The finish is decided before the spray gun comes out.

Internal doors collect polish, wax, oil, hand grease and household cleaning products. Oak can release tannins. Veneers may be thin. Previous coatings may have poor adhesion. The correct answer begins with identifying what is actually on the door.

SprayMasters does not sell every door the same generic paint system. Preparation and primers are selected around the substrate, contamination risk, existing finish and expected use.

Wax and oil

Residues can cause crawling, fisheyes and adhesion failure if they are not recognised and removed correctly.

Oak tannins

Natural extractives can discolour pale finishes. A compatible isolation strategy may be needed before colour coats.

Door edges

Edges, rebates and hardware areas need considered preparation so the door still operates after refinishing.

False promises

A quick key and coat is not a professional specification. Preparation must match the door in front of us.

What we spray

One door or a coordinated houseful.

Suitability is confirmed from photographs and inspection. Door construction, previous products, damage, glazing and the desired finish all matter.

01 / OAK

Oak internal doors

Change warm or orange-toned oak to a considered solid colour while retaining the value and character of the existing doors.

02 / TIMBER

Hardwood and softwood

Painted or clear-finished timber doors assessed for knots, resin, tannins, damage and existing coating compatibility.

03 / VENEER

Veneered doors

Suitable veneered and engineered doors can often be recoloured, but sanding must respect the veneer’s limited thickness.

04 / PAINTED

Previously painted doors

Sound existing paint can be assessed for adhesion and compatibility before preparation and refinishing.

05 / GLAZED

Glazed internal doors

Panels and sight lines are carefully masked. Loose glazing compounds, sealants and edge details are checked first.

06 / JOINERY

New door sets and panels

Repeat finishing for joiners and carpenters, including samples, labelling, colour consistency and batch planning.

The honest oak answer

Painting oak changes the colour—not automatically the grain.

Oak has a pronounced natural grain. After preparation, priming and colour coating, that texture will normally remain visible beneath a solid finish. Many customers like the subtle evidence of real timber.

If a flatter, more uniform appearance is required, grain filling must be discussed as a separate, more labour-intensive specification. It should never be quietly promised by showing a photograph of a completely different door material.

  • Both door faces, edges and detailed profiles assessed
  • Oils, waxes, varnishes and household polishes identified where possible
  • Tannin and knot risks considered before pale colour changes
  • Hardware removed where practical for cleaner finishing
  • Grain expectations agreed before work begins
Worth knowing: newly coated doors need careful handling while the finish develops full resistance. Dry enough to return is not the same as fully cured.
The SprayMasters process

A workshop system built around the actual door.

Exact preparation varies. The control points do not: assessment, cleaning, repair, correct primers, measured application and appropriate curing.

01

Assess

Door construction, finish, contamination, damage, glazing and grain expectations are recorded.

02

Dismantle

Handles and suitable hardware are removed. Door identification is retained across full-house batches.

03

Prepare

Doors are cleaned, keyed and repaired. Failed or incompatible coatings may require further removal.

04

Prime

Compatible primers and isolators are selected for timber, tannins, knots and the existing surface.

05

Finish

Colour coats are applied for controlled coverage, then allowed to cure before careful return.

Colour and sheen

From dated orange oak to a deliberate interior scheme.

Choose from RAL, NCS and British Standard references, or request a professional match to a popular designer colour. Whites, warm neutrals, black, deep green and muted greys are common choices for internal doors.

When we match a Farrow & Ball or another designer reference, we create the chosen colour in a compatible professional coating system. This does not mean the designer brand’s retail wall paint is sprayed onto the doors.

    Internal door spraying questions

Straight answers before you remove a door.

Can oak internal doors be sprayed white or another colour?

Many sound oak internal doors can be prepared and spray finished in a solid colour. Existing oils, waxes and varnishes must be assessed, and pale finishes may require an appropriate isolation system for tannins. The natural oak grain normally remains visible unless separate grain filling is specified.

Is spraying internal doors cheaper than replacing them?

It can be, particularly where a property has multiple quality oak or timber doors that already fit correctly and retain suitable hardware. The comparison depends on quantity, condition, required preparation, collection and whether replacement would also require resizing, hanging and new ironmongery.

Do you collect and return internal doors?

Collection and return may be available around Derby, Derbyshire and suitable Nottingham routes. Practicality and cost depend on the number of doors, size, glazing, access and distance. Customers and joinery firms may also deliver directly to the Derby workshop by arrangement.

Will spray painting hide the grain in oak doors?

No—not automatically. Solid colour changes the colour but the natural open grain can remain visible. A flatter appearance requires a separate grain-filling specification, additional labour and agreed expectations before work begins.

Can glazed internal doors be sprayed?

Many glazed doors can be sprayed. Glass, seals, beads and sight lines must be assessed and masked carefully. Send close photographs of both faces and the glazing details so SprayMasters can confirm suitability.

Can you match a Farrow & Ball colour?

SprayMasters can produce professional coatings matched to popular designer references as well as RAL, NCS and British Standard colours. A matched colour is applied in a compatible door-coating system; it does not mean retail wall paint is used.

How long does internal door spraying take?

Turnaround depends on door quantity, material, condition, previous products, repairs, grain filling and the workshop schedule. A realistic programme is provided after assessment. Doors also need appropriate curing and careful handling after return.

Do you spray new doors for joiners and carpenters?

Yes. SprayMasters provides workshop finishing for new door sets, panels and related joinery. Trade enquiries should include drawings or schedules where available, substrate, quantity, colour, sheen and deadline.

Keep the doors. Change the whole interior.

How many internal doors need a new colour?

Send photographs of both faces and edges, the quantity, your postcode and the finish you have in mind. SprayMasters will tell you what is realistic.
